Nature’s Helicopters

Our Hummingbird feeder

has to be cleaned,

the bright red liquid

poured out,

The mold scrubbed

from the plastic

to prevent long tiny tongues

from swelling.

This process

reminds me of bottle scrubbing

for my children

when they were babies.

Now they are leaving the nest.

Every three days,

the routine is a bit of a bother.

The trick is to fill them

only a little.

I look at the wasted

liquid and wonder.

Then I hear

whirring of

nature’s helicopters.

A Ruby Throat

glistens in the sun.

It is worth it.
