Navajo Rug

(Arizona)

You are art of The People,

Their spirit flows through you.

You echo heartbeats from tribal drums.

You are the tree of life

inherited from the mothers,

taught and  handed down.

You show the work

of each of seven sisters,

sing songs of wild birds.

You share whispered confidences.

You tell the story

of a rushing mountain river,

reflect the silence

of a deep canyon.

You conjure images of sheep

grazing on pink sand,

the jutting

of ancient crimson rock.

                                                                                                                                                                           You share magic.

You make busy hands

visible as they

weave wool yarn

spun from love

onto  wooden looms.

You display bright colors.

You give cloth softness.

You are made with intricate skill.

You became a honored artwork.

You have been chosen

by those who admire

but seldom understand.

You create a place of refuge.

In our home.
