Outside the Theater

She huddles in a corner

on urine-soaked concrete

underneath a cinema marquis.

Her stomach aches,

having borne a long life.

Her eyes, still blue,

glaze over.

She picks up dirty letters

from a pocket

in her tattered coat.

She holds them together,

offering them as poems

to passersby

for a dollar.

They turn away,

offering their money

to the ticket counter.
