Questioning Ideas that Separate

Image

Maybe they met before being born,

the Englishman and the American,

shook hands on the twelfth of February, 1808

and went on their way, affecting each other

enough to question ideas that separate.

For later Charles Darwin, observer of nature

who believed that all life

originated from one organism

questioned the words that separate:

“Men have dominion over all living things,”

and wrote the Origin of the Species.

And later Abraham Lincoln, observer of mankind

who believed that all men

were created equal

questioned the words that separate:

“Slaves, obey your masters,”

and wrote the Emancipation Proclamation.

Proponents of unity, both rewrote the course

of history, both caused divisiveness among humans

regarding the issue of superiority.
