Aging is Not Optional

Age is a strange country

you think you only visit

tempting, full bodied

breathing well

in polished oak houses.

When you finally get there,

anesthetized and whining,

you will probably want to leave.

Remember you who are young

With your “glossy skinned

shiny-eyed white smile

what an ad” promise:

you do not discover this country

on  jets of energy flying through

paintbrush celebrations

pulled by bouquets of wildfire

from boxes full of high fashion

party hats.

This country discovers you

shipwrecked in muted wrinkle

thin bone light fog

aching with rheumatoid pain

as you take supplements,

travel miles through

millenniums of foreign

lands to escape.

You cannot.
