Diving Birds and Flying Fishes

“A bird may love a fish

but where would they build a home together?”

Fiddler On the Roof (1971)

A pilot wished to be a diving bird.

A diver wished to be a flying fish.

He swooped down from an overhead plane

as she broke above the ocean’s surface.

He met her as she jumped from the water.

He captured her in an instant

and they took to the air together

for a brief time with nothing planned.

She heard humpbacks calling.

He pointed where to look.

He carried her above the breakers.

She forgot that she couldn’t remain.

She knew breathless freefalling.

He knew singing.  She knew scales of blue.

They fell in love in the brief space

between sea and sky.

Salt spray stung her eyes

from the waves where he released her

to swim freely.

She knew at that moment she could fly .
